What’s On at the Marina

December 20, 2018

Check out the schedule of events happening at the marina during the festive season and into the New Year:

Whats On

Are you a paddler?

December 20, 2018

We are currently looking into the feasibility of developing a kayak/ SUP storage facility on the water at Abell Point Marina. There are many paddlers who use their craft irregularly due to the inconvenience of loading onto the car and then down the boat ramp. There really is no better place to paddles that the calm waters of the Whitsundays, so what we want to know is, that if we built a storage facility would people use it?

Additionally, would access to our Ocean Club lounge for showers and coffee make the offer more appealing?

If you have time, please complete this survey we have out together – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5B93W8J

If you are very interested in such a facility, please remember to register your details on the survey and we will be in touch.

Extreme Weather Vessel Preparedness

December 11, 2018

With the strong wind predictions forecast for the weekend, it is important to ensure you are up to date with best practices for dealing with any weather event in a marine environment.

You will find attached here our updated “Extreme Weather Vessel Preparation” procedure. This guide has been developed for your safety and that of your vessel and includes recommendations to take in to consideration when preparing for strong winds or a weather event.

Please remember, in the event of extreme weather, your preparedness can go a long way in reducing harm to yourself, your vessel and also the marina infrastructure.

If you are absent from the vessel and unable to take the appropriate precautions, please arrange to have an alternative person or company prepare and secure your vessel accordingly.  Once these arrangements have been made please contact the Marina Office and provide us with the details of your emergency contact-  info@abellpointmarina.com.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Should you have any questions please contact us on (07) 4946 2400.

December Marina News

December 1, 2018

The Whitsundays dominated again at the 2018 Queensland Tourism Awards in November, taking home 5 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze awards. 10 of those 14 awards were presented to Abell Point Marina operators, which is a true testament to the level of quality and service our precinct provides.

We were also very excited to announce the acquisition of the award-winning Coral Sea Resort last week. With a restaurant, pool, gym, shop, tour desk and well-appointed ocean-view hotel rooms, the resort will be an outstanding addition to the marina precinct when we assume ownership on 1st July.

We are currently conducting a feasibility study into the development of an on-water Stand Up Paddle Board/ Kayak storage facility adjacent to Ocean Club. If you are a paddler we would love if you could complete our online survey – https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5B93W8J

As a further step towards achieving our environmental goals, we have removed single use coffee cups from Ocean Club. We have APM reusable enviro coffee cups available for sale at the marina office for $10. Coffee at Ocean Club remains free with a reusable cup. We hope you will support this great initiative and the cups make an interesting Christmas stocking filler!

On the event front, we will be hosting a VIP Christmas Shopping Party at Lure on 7th December. Over 30 businesses have confirmed stalls offering Christmas gifts for sale such as fashion, homewares, jewellery, beauty treatments, giftware and much more. The bar and stalls will be open from 6pm.

December’s Ocean Club Sizzler (Thursday 6 December) is with a difference – a breakfast sizzler. Join us on the deck from 7.30am for bacon and eggs.

We have also started hosting a monthly Women’s Business and Men’s Business networking nights on Thursday evenings at The Garden Bar. Please feel free to join us and spread the word.

Pilates at Lure on Sunday mornings will take a break from 16 Dec – 6 Jan 2019, back in the New Year. Check out the What’s On page of our website for all events.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the team at Abell Point Marina.

Media Release: Airlie Icon Changes Hands

November 20, 2018

Paul Darrouzet, owner of the multi award-winning Airlie Beach marina precinct, Abell Point Marina, last week exchanged unconditional sale and purchase contracts for the acquisition of the iconic Coral Sea Resort. This strategic move is the next step in Darrouzet’s plan to continue developing Abell Point as a leading international marina.

Abell Point Marina over recent years has experienced a $30 million upgrade and now hosts 520 wet berths, berthing to accommodate vessels up to 80m in length and award-winning restaurants and venues.

With impeccably maintained grounds and a beautiful new 2.5 hectare garden opening in the new year, the marina already boasts a resort-like feel. The addition of first-class boutique accommodation and an enticing array of facilities – including an award-winning oceanfront restaurant, a private dining seaside gazebo, cocktail lounge, fitness room, private jetty, 25 metre pool, wedding chapel, 200 seat function room, resort shop and tour desk – will contribute to the marina precinct becoming a premier mainland destination resort.

Of his recent acquisition, Paul Darrouzet says, “Over the course of the past two years the Whitsundays have faced a great deal of adversity. However, that said, we are all greatly confident in the future of the region and I have a sincere and deep interest and investment in the ongoing development of the Airlie Beach community. I am truly excited about this next phase on a number of levels, from our superyacht strategy through to every aspect of our business; this acquisition makes sense.”

Greg Waites will continue as General Manager of the Coral Sea Resort, working closely with Abell Point Marina General Manager, Kate Purdie, who will oversee the integration of the resort into the marina precinct.

Kate explains, “Coral Sea Resort is a well-run, excellent asset, in arguably the best location in Australia. It is a natural addition to the marina precinct portfolio. We partner regularly on special events and the businesses already have great synergy. We’re looking forward to offering our marina customers the same world-class service they have come to expect, along with a new array of resort benefits to accompany their berthing.”

Greg is equally optimistic, saying, “Paul’s proven commitment to excellence in quality and value has been evident throughout the redevelopment of Abell Point Marina. I am confident that he is the right owner to take Coral Sea Resort into the future and further enhance the destination experience for our combined guests.”

The Abell Point Marina team look forward to working together with the team from Coral Sea Resort to ensure a smooth and successful integration over the coming months.

Environmental management proves a key business focus for Abell Point Marina

November 16, 2018

Media Release: 16.11.18

Abell Point Marina has been named the first marina in Australia to achieve a score of 100% on the International Clean Marina audit.

In an assessment on 30 October, Abell Point Marina was re-accredited as a Level 3 Clean Marina and also scored 100% on the Fish Friendly Marina assessment.

The re-accreditation process included a thorough review of the marina’s policies and procedures, taking into account 10 different categories.

In the re-accreditation confirmation letter from the Marina Industries Association (MIA), the assessor commented that Abell Point Marina, “is an exemplary model of best environmental management practices for marinas.”

Colin Bransgrove, Executive Officer, Marina Industries Association says this of Abell Point Marina’s re-accreditation “Abell Point Marina is to be congratulated for their 100% score resulting from re-accreditation under the International Clean Marina and associated Fish Friendly Marina Programs. The audits for these Programs are conducted by a qualified third party auditor. The environmental leadership provided by Abell Point Marina as reflected in this result is a valuable asset for the regional community.”

This is a proud moment for the Abell Point Marina team, who are dedicated to protecting the marina’s natural surrounds, notably the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Kate Purdie, General Manager, explains, “Commitment to good environmental management practices is a key priority for our business. As a destination marina we are also committed to educating the vessel owners and tourists who frequent our precinct, to ensure that environmental awareness is top of mind as they enjoy their time in the Whitsundays”.

Earlier this year, Abell Point Marina’s village became the first in Australia to have all food outlets and venues sign up to the globally recognised campaign, The Last Straw.

The Last Straw campaign aims to eradicate single use plastic straws across the world and encourages food outlets, venues, restaurants, bars and other hospitality businesses to commit to becoming plastic straw free. Going a step further the marina has engaged the Whitsunday business community through a social media campaign, to encourage the entire Whitsunday region to sign up to the campaign.

With over 500,000 plastic straws being discarded worldwide on a daily basis, Abell Point Marina has removed 70,000 straws per annum from circulation with their campaign commitment. In addition to the food outlets at the marina, many of the commercial tour operators that call the marina home have also committed to this worthwhile cause.

Located in Airlie Beach, the gateway to the Whitsunday islands and Great Barrier Reef, conservation of the marina environment and education of visitors is a focus of Abell Point Marina’s marine operations.

The International Clean Marina program sets an environmental benchmark standard for marinas across the globe and the key focus of the program is to assist the marina industry operators in their endeavours to protect inland and coastal waterways by leading them through a voluntary accreditation process.
